join the brotherhood at St. John's Lodge

What is the process to become a mason?

The eligibility criteria is covered in our FAQ but the process is more complex.

We would like to get to know you before offering anyone a petition for membership.  This is important to us because we want to offer the best experience possible to the new member and ensure all parties have similar expectations.  While we are here to make new friends and meet brothers, our highest priority is that nothing disrupts the harmony of the lodge.  There is no timeline for how long it might take before being offered a petition.  Get involved in our public events, get to know us.

Once you have submitted a petition the process will take no less than 3 months. It may take as much 5 or 6 months if there are delays, like our summer break.  Below is an outline of the process:

  1. Your completed petition must be delivered to the secretary, and announced at the next meeting.
  2. All members of the lodge must be notified in writing.
  3. A Committee of Inquiry will review your application and meet with you in person.
  4. The Committee submits a report in open lodge at the following meeting
  5. If the report is favourable, a notice of ballot will be sent in writing to all lodge members
  6. At the next meeting, a ballot is cast on your application
  7. You are contacted with the results, and if favourable a date will be set for your initiation no sooner than the next meeting

You are always able to contact us throughout the process if you have questions.
